Useful information on Belgium
General: Belgium, officially the Kingdom of Belgium, is a federal state in Western Europe comprising three communities, three regions, and four language areas. Belgium is also synonymous with chocolate and beer, and its people are some of the friendliest and unassuming of all of Europe. It is a founding member of the European Union and hosts the EU's headquarters, as well as NATO. Brussels is the capital city and is the home of the European Parliament. Belgium became independent from the Netherlands in 1830. Belgium's two largest regions are the Dutch-speaking region of Flanders in the north and the French-speaking southern region of Wallonia. The Brussels-Capital Region, officially bilingual, is a mostly French-speaking enclave within the Flemish Region. Tensions between the Dutch-speaking Flemings of the north and the French-speaking Walloons of the south have led in recent years to constitutional amendments granting these regions formal recognition and autonomy. International telephone country code: +32, Internet country code: .be, Electricity voltage: 230V frequency 50 Hz, Electrical outlet: Type E European 2-pin, Time zone: +1 GMT, Daylight saving time: +1 hour
Climate: Belgium has a temperate maritime climate influenced by the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean; mild winters, cool summers; rainy, humid, cloudy. Since the country is small there is little variation in climate from region to region, although the marine influences are less inland. Rainfall is distributed throughout the year with a dryer period from April to September.
Language: Belgium is home to two main linguistic groups, the Dutch-speakers, mostly Flemish, and the French-speakers, mostly Walloons, plus a small group of German-speakers. Officially, Belgium is bilingual; Dutch and French. Belgium has four language areas:
- the Dutch language area (Flanders, in the north),
- the French language area (Wallonia, in the south),
- the Dutch & French bilingual area (Brussels, capital city),
- the German language area (bordering Germany, which has specific language facilities for French-speakers).
Regions/provinces: There are three regions:
- the Flemish Region, subdivided into five provinces
- the Walloon Region, subdivided into five provinces
- the Brussels-Capital Region
Major cities: The main cities are Brussels (capital city), Antwerp/Antwerpen and Bruges/Brugge. The top ten cities by population:
1 Brussels (Brussels Capital Region)
2 Antwerpen (Flanders)
3 Gent (Flanders)
4 Charleroi (Walloon Region)
5 Liège (Walloon Region)
6 Brugge (Flanders)
7 Namur (Walloon Region)
8 Leuven (Flanders)
9 Mons (Walloon Region)
10 Aalst (Flanders)
Major airports and railway stations: Brussels Airport Zaventem (BRU) is the major international airport in Belgium. Charleroi Airport (CLR - Brussels south airport) is a low-cost airline airport. Antwerp Airport (ANR) is a small business airport. Brussels Midi Railway Station (ZYR) with Eurostar connections. As Belgium is such a small country, there are no internal flights.
Ports and harbours: Belgium has four sea ports: Antwerp, Bruges-Zeebrugge, Ghent, Ostend
Local travel: There is a good public transport system in all the major towns and cities, with underground, tram and bus services in Antwerp and Brussels, buses and tramways in Charleroi, Ghent and Ostend and bus systems elsewhere. There is a standard flat-fare system, with discounts for five- and 10-journey multi-ride tickets. One-day tickets and multi-mode tourist travel cards are also available.
Taxis: Taxis are plentiful in all towns. The tip is included in the final metre price. Taxi companies may be telephoned for a small extra charge. Taking a taxi in Brussels is expensive compared with other European cities. The pick-up charge in Brussels is €2.40 during the day and €4.20 at night. After this, you are charged about €1.20-2.40 per kilometre (February 2011 rates). All taxi cars use a taximeter, and the drivers generally use them.
Currency: From 1832 until 2002, Belgium's currency was the Belgian franc. The euro banknotes and coins were introduced in Belgium on 1 January 2002, after a transitional period of three years when the euro was the official currency but only existed as 'book money'. The standard Belgian euro coins designated for circulation show the portrait of King Albert II. Unlike banknotes, which are the same in all euro-area countries, the coins have one common side and one country-specific side. The notes come in 5-, 10-, 20-, 50-, 100-, 200- and 500-euro denominations. The approximate exchange rates on 6 June, 2011 are: 1 US$ = 0.684 Euro, 1 GB£ = 1.225 Euro
Money: Legislation on the controls of cash entering or leaving the EU applicable in all Member States, including Belgium, requires that cash money that amounts to 10,000 Euro or more (this includes traveller's cheques) have to be declared. This will not apply if you are travelling within the EU or travelling via the EU from outside of the EU to a non-EU country.
