Useful information on Malta
General: Great Britain formally acquired possession of Malta in 1814. The island became independent in 1964. A decade later Malta became a republic. Since about the mid-1980s, the island has transformed itself into a freight transshipment point, a financial center, and a tourist destination. Malta became an EU member in May 2004.
Currency: The official Maltese currency is the Euro, as of January 1, 2008. Previously, the official Maltese currency was the Maltese Lira (plural: Liri), also referred to as Maltese Pound. Maltese banknotes will be convertible at the Central Bank of Malta until 31 January 2018, and coins until 1 February 2010.
Principal localities: Birkirkara, Mosta, Qormi, Zabbar, San Pawl Il-Bahar (St. Paul's Bay), Sliema, San Gwann (Msierah), Naxxar, Rabat, Zejtun, Zebbug, Fgura.
Airport: Malta International Airport (MLA). It is the only airport in Malta, and it serves the whole Maltese Archipelago. It is located between Luqa and Gudja. It occupies the location of the former RAF Luqa and was completely re-furbished, becoming fully operational on March 25, 1992. It is still referred to by locals as Luqa Airport, and as Valletta Airport internationally, as it is located about 5 kilometres from the Maltese capital Valletta.
Ports and harbors: Marsaxlokk and Valletta. The Maltese Islands are just 60 miles from Sicily, and 180 miles from the African continent.
Taxis: There are black taxis, which have to be called in advance, and white taxis, which you can stop in the street. Malta's taxis can be surprisingly expensive. It is advisable to ask "How much?" before you get in the cab. You can settle for using the meter if you cannot agree on a price.
Public transportation: The public transportation system in Malta consists of busses. The public busses go to just about everywhere in Malta. Because of the small size of the Island, most bus routes are only about half an hour long. The main terminal is located in Valletta. However, passengers can board the busses at designated bus stops.
