Casinos
California voters in March 2000 approved a state referendum that legally allowed the state’s Native Indians tribes to offer electronic gaming machines, blackjack, and other house-banked card games, but not craps or roulette.
There are many card rooms in California and most of them also offer some form of player-banked blackjack, which is different from that played in Las Vegas. Because Californian casinos are prohibited by law from playing blackjack as we know it, they have added a twist to the game and the game is played to 22 rather than 21 (see California games on this site).
All California casinos normally offer as standard: slots, video poker, and video keno. Other possible games include: video blackjack, poker, bingo, mini-baccarat, pai gow poker, caribbean stud poker, three card poker, let it ride, casino war, and simulcasting. The minimum gambling age is 18 or 21 if liquor is served, and all casinos are usually open 24 hours.
Many of these Native Indian casinos are not within easy reach, so it is advisable to get advice on how to get there beforehand.

Card Rooms
There are more than 100 card rooms in California ranging in size from one table to over 200 tables.
California law allows card rooms to play a variety of card games and the rooms or houses have no stake in the outcome of any of these games. Players play against each other and pay a fee for use of the facilities.
The three main types of games are:
- Variations of poker such as Hold'Em and different variations of stud poker
- California games (Asian games) such as pai gow and two-handed poker
- Different versions of a game similar to Blackjack that is called California Blackjack, 21st Century Blackjack.
California law allows player banked games, whereby one player can act as the banker/dealer and play against the other players at the table. This format is used in the California games and the Blackjack type games.
There are no limits on stakes in most card rooms in California. Many of the card rooms have full food and beverage services and are located close to major airports and freeways.
