General: Argentina, officially the Argentine Republic, is the second largest country in South America (after Brazil), constituted as a federation of 23 provinces and an autonomous city, Buenos Aires. It is the eighth-largest country in the world by land area. The name of the country is derived from the Latin argentum (silver). Climate: Argentina is south of the Equator and therefore the seasons are similar to Australia but are the reverse of Europe, North America and much of Asia. Summer in Buenos Aires (months of January and February) is quite hot and humid, while winter is damp and chilly. Rain falls throughout the year. Average annual temperatures range from 24 to 11 Celsius in Buenos Aires and Cordoba, and 24 to 8 Celsius in Mendoza. Further south the weather becomes colder with a mean temperature of 0 degrees in winter for the city of Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego.

Taxis: In most major cities of Argentina taxis are abundant. Within the city of Buenos Aires, there are 32,000 taxis and is one of the best cities in the world to take taxis. The vehicles are painted yellow on the roof and black on the rest of the its body. It is common to hail or flag a taxi on the street. You know if a taxi is available when a small red flag-light inside the cab is on and shows LIBRE. There are many radio-taxi companies. They are ordered by telephone and pick up passengers anywhere. Radio Taxis can be distinguished by the words "Radio Taxi" on top and stickers on the back and front doors and can be hailed on the street. Tipping cab drivers is not customary, although most passengers do round up the amount they pay. The most common way locals give directions to a taxi driver is by naming the destination street and the nearest cross street, rather than the number of the shop/house/building.
Currency: The Argentine Peso (ARS) is the currency in Argentina. The symbol for ARS can be written $. Paper money is available in values of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 pesos. One peso equals 100 centavos and coins are available in values of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 centavos and one peso. The approximate exchange rate on 6th January 2011 was: 1 Euro = 5.15 ARS, 1 US$ = 3.97 ARS, 1 GB£ = 6.13 ARS.
