Useful Information on Botswana
General: The Republic of Botswana (a parliamentary republic government) is a 'sub Saharan' country located in Southern Africa. A small, landlocked country of 1.9 million people, Botswana is mostly covered by the Kalahari Desert and the population is concentrated in the eastern part of the country. It is bordered by South Africa to the south and southeast, Namibia to the west and north, and Zimbabwe to the northeast. It meets Zambia at a single point (where the Chobe and Zambezi Rivers meet). Formerly the British protectorate of Bechuanaland, Botswana adopted its new name after becoming independent in 1966. Since independence, Botswana has had one of the fastest growth rates in per capita income in the world. Botswana was one of the poorest countries in Africa and has transformed itself to become one of the fastest growing economies in the world. International telephone country code: +267, Internet country code: .bw, Electricity voltage: 230V frequency 50 Hz, Electrical outlet: South African 3-pin type (a larger version of the old British three circular pins), Time zone: GMT + 2
Climate: Warm winters and hot summers. Botswana is dry in winter from April to October, sunny days and cold nights. Rain falls occur from November to March and within that period there may be long dry spells. These are summer months so it is hot and humid.
Languages: The official language of Botswana is English although Setswana is widely spoken across the country. In the Setswana language the prefixes are more important than they are in many other languages. These prefixes include "Bo", which refers to the country, "Ba", which refers to the people, "Mo", which is one person, and "Se" which is the language (as in Setswana). For example, the main tribe of Botswana is the Tswana people, hence the name Botswana for its country. The people as a whole are Batswana, singular (one person) is a Motswana.
Major cities: Gaborone (capital city), Francistown, Selebi-Phikwe, Kanye, Lobatse, Mahalapye, Serowe.
Regions/Districts: Central, Kgalagadi, Ghanzi, Kgatleng, Kweneng, North-West, North-East, Southern and South-East. Among all these, Central is the largest of the Botswana Districts.
Major airports:
- Gaborone, Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (GBE)
- Maun, Maun International Airport (MUB)
- Kasane, Kasane Airport (BBK)
- Francistown, Francistown Airport (FRW)
- Selebi-Phikwe, Selebi-Phikwe Airport (PKW)
- Ghanzi, Ghanzi Airport (GNZ)
- Jwaneng, Jwaneng Airport (JWA)
Gaborone International Airport is 15 km to the north of the city, about 20 minutes by taxi. Approximate taxi cost: BWP 20. Airlines with flights from and to Gaborone airport: Air Botswana, Air Zimbabwe, South African Airways
Taxis: Public transport in and around towns consists of share-taxis (up to 5 passengers at a time) or mini-bus services operating at controlled flat fares and all vehicles licensed to carry passengers can be identified by their number plates with blue backgrounds. Mini-buses can be waved down along the road and you ask the driver to stop when you want to get off. Exclusive use of taxis is sometimes available at a higher charge although fares should always be agreed before setting off. Trains and luxury inter-city coaches run between Gaborone and Bulawayo in Zimbabwe and Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa.
Currency: The Pula (BWP)is the official currency of Botswana and is subdivided into 100 thebe (cents). Pula literally means "rain" in Setswana, because rain is very scarce in Botswana and therefore valuable. The approximate exchange rate on 29 October 2010 was: 1 Euro = 9 BWP, 1 US$ = 6.50 BWP, 1 GB£ = 10.40 BWP.
Money: The Botswana Pula (P) is divided into 100 Thebe (t). Bank notes denominations are P100, P50, P20, P10 and P5. Coins denominations are P2, P1, 50t, 25t, 10t, 5t and 1t are in circulation. Most hotels, shops and restaurants accept major credit cards. Travellers' cheques are accepted at banks, hotels and the airport. ATMs are available in the major towns, but most only accept Visa cards. Foreign bank notes and travellers cheques may be converted into local currency at most banks and hotels. The US Dollar, Euro, SA Rand and GB Pound Sterling are widely accepted. When converting foreign currency you will be required to show your passport. While cash of any amount is no longer restricted, any person entering or leaving Botswana is required to declare Pula and/or foreign currency bank notes in their possession if the amount is equal to or exceeds the equivalent of P10,000.00 (approx. US$ 1,500.00).
