Useful information on Chile
General: Chile, officially the Republic of Chile, is a country in South America occupying a long, narrow coastal strip between the Andes mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Along with Ecuador, it is one of two countries in South America that do not border Brazil. In 1973, following a military coup, Augusto Pinochet ruled Chile until a freely elected president was installed in 1990. Since then Chile has increasingly assumed regional and international leadership roles befitting its status as a stable, democratic nation. International telephone country code: +56, Internet country code: .cl, Electricity voltage: 220V frequency 50 Hz, Electrical outlet: Type C European 2-pin and type L Italian 3-pin, Time zone: -4 GMT
Languages: Spanish (official), Mapudungun, German, English. Southern Chile is enriched with German heritage where a small percentage of people speak German. The Chileans speak Spanish in their own accent, a style called Chilean Spanish, and refer to their spoken language as "Castellano" or Castilian.
Climate: Being in the southern hemisphere, summer in Chile is from December through February and winter from June to August. The climate in Chile varies according to the geographical regions. The climate in the North is dry and arid. Rainfall is practically zero and temperatures can reach 35 Celsius, while night temperatures are very low, down to 0 Celsius. The Central Region has the best climate with long, dry summers and short, chilly winters. In the South of the country, summers are short and rainfall is frequent throughout the year. Winters are very cold and very wet. In the Far South, Patagonia, weather conditions can be extreme. Rainfall is more than frequent and winters are very cold.
Provinces/Regions: Chile is divided into 15 regions (the regions are divided into 54 provinces). Each region is given a Roman numeral, followed by a name. Roman numerals were assigned in ascending order from north to south. The Santiago Metropolitan Region, located in the center of the country and home to the country's capital Santiago, was excluded from this naming scheme and given instead the initials RM, standing for Region Metropolitana (Metropolitan Region). With the creation of regions XIV in the south and XV in the north (XIII is not used) in 2007, the north-south Roman numeral order was broken. The regions from north to south are:
XV - Arica and Parinacota
I - Tarapacá
II - Antofagasta
III - Atacama
IV - Coquimbo
V - Valparaíso
VI - O'Higgins
VII - Maule
VIII - Biobío
IX - Araucanía
XIV - Los Ríos
X - Los Lagos
XI - Aisén
XII - Magallanes and Antártica Chilena
RM Santiago Metropolitan
Major cities: Santiago is the capital and largest city of Chile and the fifth largest city in South America. More than one fourth of the population lives in the greater Santiago area. About nine out of ten Chileans live in cities. The major cities are: Santiago, Antofagasta, Vina Del Mar, Valparaiso, Talcahuano, San Bernardo, Temuco, Iquique, Concepcion, Rancagua, Talca, Arica, Coquimbo, Puerto Montt, La Serena. The 5 top popular cities are: Santiago, Vina Del Mar, Easter Island, Arica, Osorno and the Lake District.
Major airports:
- Santiago city (Santiago Metropolitan region), Comodoro Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport (SCL)
- Arica city (Arica & Parinacota region), Chacalluta International Airport (ARI)
- Antofagasta city (Antofagasta region), Cerro Moreno International Airport (ANF)
- Iquique city (Tarapaca region), Diego Aracena International Airport (IQQ)
- Puerto Montt city (Los Lagos region), El Tepual Airport (PMC)
- Punta Arenas city (Magallanes & Antartica region), Presidente Carlos Ibanez del Campo International Airport (PUQ)
- Temuco city (Araucania region), Maquehue Airport (ZCO)
The Santiago International Airport sits on the northwest side of Santiago. Most international flights arrive into Chile via this airport, which has a very modern, clean, and efficient terminal.
Major ports and harbours: Antofagasta, Arica, Chanaral, Coquimbo, Iquique, Puerto Montt, Punta Arenas, San Antonio, San Vicente, Talcahuano, Valparaiso
Taxis: Taxis are plentiful and inexpensive. The cabs are coloured black with yellow roofs and can be hailed anywhere. Agree to a fare beforehand. Taxis with illuminated signs indicating their destination are "collective" taxis. These follow a fixed route and are shared by up to five passengers. When travelling at night by taxi you are advised to book in advance rather than hailing from the street. Quite often the driver does not know how to get to the requested destination. The more information you give to the driver about your destination, the better.
Currency: The official currency in Chile is the Peso (CLP). The symbol for CLP can be written CH$. 1 Chilean Peso = 100 centavos. The local symbol is simply $. Notes are in denominations of CH$20,000, 10,000, 5,000, 2,000 and 1,000. Coins are in denominations of CH$ 500, 100, 50, 10, 5 and 1, although the 1 peso is no longer in circulation. The approximate exchange rate on 10th January 2011 was: 1 Euro = 641 CLP, 1 US$ = 496 CLP, 1 GB£ = 772 CLP.
Money: In Chile the government does not regulate the market of foreign currency. You can exchange money at market-driven exchange rates. However, exchanging traveller's cheques in Chile has been reported to be problematic. US dollars can be changed freely in money exchange shops, travel agencies, and hotels. Other currencies can only be traded in downtown Santiago during business hours. In towns and cities, Visa and MasterCard are commonly accepted, although Diners Club and American Express less so. The import and export of local and foreign currencies is unlimited, however amounts exceeding the equivalent of US$10,000 must be declared.
Casinos: Before 2005, there were only seven casinos in Chile, but following a new law passed in 2005, new casinos have opened. The new law allows five types of gaming activity on casino premises: bingo, cards, roulette, dice and slot machines. Several of the new casinos in Chile are part of a five-star hotel and offer wider entertainment facility. Most casinos in Chile are open from early afternoon till the early morning hours. The legal minimum gambling age in Chile is 18 years.
