Useful information on Cyprus

General: Officially the Republic of Cyprus, a former British colony, it became an independent republic in 1960 and a member of the Commonwealth in 1961. In 1974, following an attempted coup d'état by Greek Cypriot nationalists aimed at annexing the island to Greece, Turkey invaded and occupied one third of the island. This led to the establishment of a separate Turkish Cypriot political entity in the north - the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" (TRNC), which is not recognised by the British Government. This event and its resulting political situation are matters of ongoing dispute. The island is de facto partitioned into four main parts:
- South of the island, the area under the effective control of the Republic of Cyprus. There are no casinos here.
- In the north, the Turkish-controlled area calling itself the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognised only by Turkey. The casinos are in this northern part of Cyprus.
- In the middle, the United Nations-controlled Green Line, separating the two
- And two British Sovereign Base Areas, Akrotiri and Dhekelia
The Republic of Cyprus is one of the advanced economies in the region, and has been a member of the European Union since 1 May 2004. It is divided into six districts (Greek/Turkish names):
- Nicosia (Lefkosia/Lefkosa)
- Famagusta (Ammochostos/Gazimagusa)
- Kyrenia (Keryneia/Girne)
- Larnaca (Larnaka/Iskele)
- Limassol (Lemesos/Leymosun)
- Paphos (Pafos/Baf)
Official language: Turkish. English is also widely used and understood. Many hotels employ German and French speaking personnel as well.
Climate: Cyprus has a typical Mediterranean climate, summers are hot and dry and winters are warm. In summer the average temperature is 30C (90F), and in the coldest months it is around 10C (50F).
Major airports: When planning your trip to the island you may not have the opportunity to decide which of the Cyprus airports is best for you. Many package holiday companies simply charter airlines that will fly into either Paphos or Larnaca and will then transport you to your chosen resort. TRNC’s Ercan International Airport airport is situated 12 km (7 miles) east of Nicosia. Unfortunately due to the TRNC not being internationally recognized all flights to North Cyprus touch down on Turkish mainland first. From Europe touch down is usually to Istanbul, Izmir and Antalya.

Passport & Visa Requirements: The citizens of European Union (EU), UK, Azerbaijan, Turkey, USA, Canada, Mexico, Iceland, Japan, Russia, Switzerland, Norway, Israel, Azerbaijan, Australia and New Zealand do not require visa.
Local travel: The partial lifting of restrictions on crossing the "Green Line" allows Cypriots and non-visa nationals to cross in both directions at designated crossing points. You may take a hired car through the checkpoints, except at Ledra Palace and Ledra Street, which are for pedestrians only. Many cars hired in the south are not insured for use in the north. You will not be allowed through a crossing without the correct insurance documents. In the north (TRNC), traffic flows from the left just like in the British Isles. British and other foreign nationals who have entered Cyprus through the north are considered by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus to have entered Cyprus through an illegal port of entry. The Government of the Republic of Cyprus reserves the right to fine EU (including British) citizens for illegal entry if they cross into the south.
Taxis: North Cyprus has service taxis between Kyrenia and North Nicosia. In front of Ercan Airport you will find several taxis operating in North Cyprus. Private taxis are available 24 hours in South Nicosia. Taxis operate at Larnaca airport and at Paphos airport. Taxis in Famagusta are widely available but do not carry a meter; however there are standard prices for standard journeys. There are numerous taxis in Limassol and many private taxi companies. It is strongly advised to confirm fares before taking a private taxi. Rates can increase by up to 20% between the hours of 20:30 and 06:00.
Currency: The Republic of Cyprus adopted the euro on 1 January 2008. The currency of North Cyprus, TRNC (Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus), is the Turkish Lira. In TRNC, Turkish and Turkish Cypriot banks are open from Monday to Friday, twice a day, 8am - 12am and 2pm - 4pm. Currency exchange is available in banks, exchange offices and in hotels. The major credit cards like Visa, Master, Euro cards, and checks are accepted in TRNC.
