Useful Information on Goa
General: Goa is India's smallest state by area and the fourth smallest by population. Located in South West India in the Konkan region it is bounded by the state of Maharashtra to the north and by Karnataka to the east and south, while the Arabian Sea forms its western coast. The state is divided into two districts: North Goa and South Goa. Panaji is the headquarters of the North Goa district and Margaon of the south district. Goa is India's richest state. Panaji is the state's capital while Vasco da Gama is the largest city. The historic city of Margaon still exhibits the cultural influence of the Portuguese who first landed in the early 16th century. Goa is visibly different from the rest of India owing to Portuguese rule which isolated it from the rest of India for 450 years, until 1961. The influence of Portuguese culture presents a somewhat different picture of Goa to the foreign visitor than other parts of India. Renowned for its beaches, places of worship and world heritage architecture, Goa is visited by large numbers of international and domestic tourists. The Goan population is mainly a mixture of Hindus and Roman Catholics, approximately 65% Hindu, 24% Christian. International telephone country code: +91 832, Internet country code: .in, Electricity voltage: 230V frequency 50 Hz, Electrical outlet: European 2-pin and old British 3-pin
Climate: Goa is in the tropical zone and therefore has a hot and humid climate for most of the year. The month of May is the hottest with day temperatures of over 35 °C coupled with high humidity. The monsoon rains arrive in early June and last till late September. Goa has a short winter season between mid December and February with day time temperatures of around 28 °C and 21 °C at night.
Languages: Konkani in the Devanagari script is the sole official language of Goa, but Marathi may also be used for official purposes. Konkani is spoken as a native language by about 60% of the people in the state. Konkani is spoken as a native language by about 61.21% of the people in the state. Other spoken languages include Marathi, Kannada, Urdu and Hindi. A native of Goa is called a Goan in English, Goenkar in Konkani, Govekar in Marathi, Goes (male) and Goesa (female) in Portuguese. The Portuguese language, which was used during the colonial era is less popular now.
Major cities: Goa's major cities include Mapusa, Margao, Mormugao, Panaji and Vasco. Goa's capital city is Panaji, known as Panjim in English and earlier called Pangim in Portuguese times, and known in the local language as Ponnje.
International airports: Dabolim Airport (GOI) is Goa's only airport catering to domestic and international airlines that stop en route to other Indian destinations. Dabolim Airport is serviced by the following carriers: Air India, Indian Airlines, Kingfisher Airlines, Go Air, SpiceJet, Jet Airways and Qatar Airlines and receives international flights from Qatar, Dubai, Sharjah and Kuwait in the Middle East and from Britain, Germany and Russia during the charter flight tourist season operated by Thomas Cook, Condor, Monarch Airlines, and others.
Ports: Mormugao is the main port of Goa and Panajim is one of the finest natural harbours of India.
Tourism: Goa has two main tourist seasons: winter and summer. In the winter time (mid December to February) tourists from abroad, mainly from Europe, come to Goa to enjoy the splendid climate. In the summer time (which is the rainy season) tourists from across India come to spend the holidays. Tourism is generally focused on the coastal areas of Goa, with decreased tourist activity inland. The week between Christmas and New Year, Goa is usually completely packed and the hotels, restaurants and everything else are very busy.
Taxis: In Goa there are different modes of transport: Bus, Taxi, Auto Rickshaw (a three wheeler) and also a two wheeler (a motorbike) driven by a male called Pilot. Taxis and auto-rickshaws should be paid according to metered rates and if no metre is available, travellers should use the tariff card issued by the Directorate of Transport as a guide to recognise acceptable rates. These tariff cards are displayed inside the taxis.
Currency: The official currency in India is the Indian Rupee (INR), plural Rupees. It is the only currency which is broken into paise: 1 Rupee = 100 Paise (cents). The English translation of the word Rupee is silver. The original Rupee was a silver coin. Today rupees are printed as both coins and paper notes. The approximate exchange rate on 12th OCTOBER 2010 was: 1 Euro = 61.5 INR, 1 US$ = 44.4 INR, 1 GB£ = 70.4 INR.
Money: Most of the currency in circulation in India is in bank notes. Currency denominations set in notes are 1000, 500, 100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2, and 1. The 500 and 100 Rupee notes are similar in appearance. The Indian Rupee cannot be taken out of the country nor purchased while out of India. Money exchanging facilities are available at the airport and state banks. Most major hotels and resorts offer their own currency exchange service. Travellers cheques are widely accepted as well as the United States Dollar (USD) and the British Sterling Pound (GBP) currencies.
Casinos: Goa has several casinos and are mostly in a hotel or resort. Some are in the North and some in the South offering electronic and live gaming including roulette, blackjack, baccarat and slot machines. There is an entrance fee of about 200 rupees per person. The minimum gambling age is 18.
