Useful information on Kenya
General: The Republic of Kenya is a country in East Africa. The country is named after Mount Kenya, a very significant landmark and the second among the highest mountain peaks of Africa. Before 1920, the area now known as Kenya was known as the British East Africa Protectorate. Internet country code: .ke, Time zone: GMT +3, Telephone country code: 254
Visa: Visas are required by almost all visitors to Kenya, including Europeans, Australians, New Zealanders, Americans and Canadians. Citizens from a few smaller Commonwealth countries are exempt. Visas are valid for three months from the date of entry and can be obtained on arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. The fee is GB Pounds 35 or US Dollars 50 for a single-entry visa. If you have any other currencies, you will need to change them into Kenyan shillings to pay for the visa fee.
Major cities: Nairobi (capital city), Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Eldoret, Nyeri, Machakos, Meru
Major airports: Most international travellers come into Kenya through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi. Some charter companies also come in through the smaller Moi International Airport (MBA) in Mombasa. Allow plenty of time to go through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where you can queue for an hour just to pass security at the entrance, and another hour at passport control.
Taxis: Taxi fares are negotiated in advance. In the cities and towns there are plenty of (often yellow) taxi cabs operating 24 hours. They do not have meters on board. You need to negotiate the price before getting in. A few miles should cost KSH 300 and a trip of 30 to 60 minutes between KSH 1000 and 1500. Taxi drivers will also be happy to be at your disposal all day. Rates vary depending on distance, from KSH 2500 per day for local transportation.
Hotels: There is a good range of fine hotels in Kenya to choose from. Hotels range from the prestigious and central Norfolk Hotel and New Stanley Hotel (Sarova Stanley) to the country-style and the quiet Fairview Hotel, well-known brands like the Hilton Hotel and the good-value Six Eighty Hotel. Most of the international hotels can be shoddy and expensive, but the independent and family-run Fairview Hotel is about half the price and as good if not better. Smoking in all public places (except in designated areas) is prohibited throughout Kenya, including hotel grounds, lounge areas and entrances. If you wish to smoke in your hotel room you should confirm first with hotel management that it is permitted.
Tipping: Tipping is not common practice among Kenyans, but it is OK to round up the bill by a few shillings. Taxi drivers do not need to be tipped unless you are exceptionally satisfied with the service.
Currency: The local currency is the Kenyan shilling (KSh) made up of 100 cents. Notes in circulation are KSh 1000, 500, 200, 100, 50 and 20, and there are also new coins of KSh 40, 20, 10, 5 and 1 in circulation. It is illegal to destroy Kenyan currency whatever the denomination. The British Pound, the Euro and the US Dollar are all easy to change throughout the country. However, visitors carrying US Dollars should ensure that the bills are relatively new (series 2000 and later), as banks in Kenya have been known not to accept older US bank notes. The approximate exchange rate as on Feb 2, 2009 is: 1 GB£ = 113 KSh, 1 Euro = 102 KSh, 1 US$ = 80 KSh. The popular places to change foreign money are at the Exchange Bureaus, which can be found everywhere. Banks also change foreign money, but their charges are high. Banks in Kenya have ATMs at most branches. Credit cards are becoming increasingly popular, although connection is poor and transactions often fail.
