Useful Information. Useful information on Macau Map of Macau.
General: The Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) is one of the two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China, the other being Hong Kong. Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 16th century and subsequently administered the region until the handover on December 20, 1999. Macau was both the first and the last European colony in China.
Economy: Macau has become the lates victim of the credit crunch. Work that ground to a halt recently was that of a huge casino development for which the Las Vegas Sands Corporation had borrowed heavily. Funding problems mean the future of the complex is in the balance. Macau has thriving industries such as textiles, electronics and toys, and a notable tourist industry that boasts a wide range of hotels, resorts, stadiums, restaurants and casinos. This makes it one of the richest cities in the world. In anticipation of the growth of Macau's tourism industry, numerous infrastructure improvements and expansions are already in place; or are at various stages of development, including:

  • Expansion of the Macau airport terminal
  • Construction of a new airport ferry terminal directly linked to Hong Kong International airport
  • Recent opening of the third bridge connecting the islands of Macau and Taipa
  • Proposed Hong Kong - Zhuhai - Macau Bridge that will reduce road travel time from Central Hong Kong to Macau from 4.5 hours to only 40 Minutes
  • Proposed Macau Light Rail Project that will link the ferry terminal with key locations in Macau
  • Guangzhou-Zhuhai High Speed Railway that will reduce travel times from 2 hours to between 40 and 50 minutes.

About Cotai Strip: Cotai Strip will offer an exciting new line-up of luxurious hotels, prestigious brands and sensational live entertainment. Between the islands of "Coloane" and "Taipa" in Macao, Cotai Strip is Asia's up-and-coming entertainment and business capital, a trademark of the Las Vegas Sands Corp. When complete, Cotai Strip will offer 20,000 guest rooms across 14 world-class hotels, more than 550,000 sq m of meeting and retail space and 25,000 seats for live, world-class entertainment. The Venetian Macao was the first to debut at Cotai Strip on August 28, 2007. The fully integrated resort-hotel features 3,000 all-suite guest rooms. When Cotai Strip is complete you will be able to walk seamlessly from one property to the next via interconnected walkways through 14 world-class hotels. These prestigious hotels are all designed to house shopping, conference, entertainment, dining and gaming areas for you to explore at your leisure.
Getting there: You can reach Macau mainland, Taipa and Coloane by ferry boat and by air. Cotai Strip CotaiJet ferry boat departs from the Hong Kong-Macao ferry terminal in Sheung Wan every 30 minutes throughout the day from 7:00 a.m., and every hour on the hour after 7:00 p.m. Other ferry services also depart to and from the Hong Kong International Airport and Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon regularly. If you are traveling to Macau from Shenzhen, take a ferry from the Fu Yong Terminal near Shenzhen's Bao'an International Airport.
Airport: Macau's International Airport provides direct air services to all major cities in Asia including Shanghai, Beijing and a number of other cities across China as well as direct flights to Bangkok, Manila, Hanoi and Taipei.
Public transportation: Macau has a well-established public transport network connecting the Macau Peninsula, Cotai, Taipa Island and Coloane Island. Buses and taxis are the major modes of public transport in Macau. In Macau traffic moves on the left. The Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal provides cross-border transportation services for passengers travelling between Macau and Hong Kong, while the Yuet Tung Terminal in the Inner Harbour serves those travelling between Macau and cities in mainland China, including Shekou and Shenzhen. Most hotels and casinos operate their own shuttle bus service between the Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal or Porta do Cerco (Macau's border to mainland China) and their premises.
Currency: Macau's official currency is the Macau Pataca (MOP). The largest bill denomination is MOP 1000. Hong Kong dollars are also freely accepted throughout the city, usually on par with MOP. China's RMB is increasingly being accepted as well. Macau has no currency restriction policies and currencies may be exchanged freely. Travelers may exchange foreign currency cash or travelers' checks in banks, hotels, and business establishments.
Approximate exchange rates (Nov 2008): 1 GB£ = 12.5 MOP; 1 US$ = 8 MOP; 1 Euro (€) = 10 MOP
Taxis: There are two types taxis - one black with cream color top (the black cab) and the other is all yellow (the yellow cab). Radio taxis are available, and there are two hotlines for the black and yellow cabs respectively. Taxis are plentiful near Macau's airport, the Hong Kong-Macau ferry terminal, and major gaming venues and hotels in the city.
