Useful information on Macedonia
General: Macedonia (Republic of Macedonia) is a landlocked country (no seaport) on the Balkan peninsula in southeastern Europe. It is bordered by Kosovo and Serbia to the north, Albania to the west, Bulgaria to the east, and Greece to the south. The country is bisected by the Vardar River and has three large lakes, each divided by a frontier line. International recognition of Macedonia's independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 was delayed because of Greece objection to the new state's use of what it considered a Hellenic name. But in 1995 Greece finally lifted its trade blockade and the two countries agreed to normalize relations, although differences over Macedonia's name remain. Macedonian law requires that all guests show ID when visiting a casino and must be at least 18 years of age.
Major cities: Skopje (capital city), Ohrid, Prilep, Bitola, Kumanovo.
Motoring: Macedonia has brought in new laws requiring all vehicles to use side lights/dipped headlights during the day. It is illegal to use mobile phones whilst driving.
Currency: The legal currency is the Macedonian denar (MKD), however, many Macedonians quote prices in Euro (€). While credit cards are accepted in larger stores and restaurants, cash in local currency is advised for purchases in small establishments. Most cities have ATMs where you can withdraw money and there are also banks and exchange booths where you can change money. Changing money on the street is to be avoided. Upon entry into Macedonia, every foreigner must declare all cash amounts of foreign currency greater than 2,000 Euro at the Customs Control Office. Failure to report funds in excess of this amount may result in the confiscation of the entire amount by the customs service.
Tipping: Tipping is not necessary but always welcomed. However, it is not advisable to tip more than 10%, as this could be seen as being patronizing and maybe considered offensive.
Major Airports: Skopje - Alexander The Great Airport (SKP), Ohrid - St. Paul the Apostle Airport (OHD). The neighbouring airports in Belgrade, Sofia, Tirana, and Thessaloniki can also be used, as they are all within a few hours' drive from Macedonia.
Taxis: The taxi service has been regulated by the City. However, avoid hailing a taxi who may charge you a lot more for your ride. You are advised to always phone for taxi, especially if you are in the Skopje Airport or at the international bus station (from mobile phones dial +389 2 before the taxi number). All taxis should charge you no more than 20 denars per km with 50 denars minimum. Typical fare from the Airport to the City centre is between 600 and 1000 denars.
