General: Nicaragua, officially the Republic of Nicaragua, is a representative democratic republic. It is the largest country in Central America. It borders Honduras in the north and Costa Rica in the south and it houses two large lakes: Lake Managua and Lake Nicaragua. Lake Nicaragua is the largest lake of Central America and has the only fresh-water sharks in the world. Nicaragua takes its name from Nicarao, chief of the indigenous tribe that lived around present-day Lake Nicaragua. Nicaragua gained independence from Spain in 1821 and became an independent republic in 1838. Electricity: 120 Volts at 60 Hertz (flat blade outlet/plug), Internet country code: .ni, International telephone code: +505, starting April 22, 2009 all Nicaraguan land and mobile numbers have one digit added at the beginning resulting in 8 digit telephone numbers nationwide. Landline numbers have digit 2 added and mobile numbers digit 8 as follows:
2??? ???? landline numbers
8??? ???? mobile numbers
Major cities: Managua (capital and largest city), Chinandega, Estelí, Granada, León, Masaya
Major international airports: Augusto C. Sandino International Airport - MGA (formerly: Managua International Airport) is the only international airport. The international airport is located in the city of Managua, at kilometer 11 of the northern highway. There are four airstrips for local flights, connecting the Pacific with the Caribbean and the San Juan River.
Managua International Airport was named "Augusto C. Sandino International Airport" during the 1980s, then renamed "Managua International Airport" in 2001, and again renamed "Augusto C. Sandino International Airport" in 2007 by President Daniel Ortega.
Air travel: During the wet season (April to October) you are advised to fly to and from the Atlantic coast of Nicaragua on early morning flights, because of the risk of severe storms later in the day. Note that there is US$ 32 departure tax, which is normally included in the price of your air ticket.
Ports and harbors: Bluefields, Corinto, El Bluff, Puerto Cabezas, Puerto Sandino, Rama, San Juan del Sur. However, the only two ports that also experience tourist arrival are located at the Pacific coast: San Juan del Sur in the south, and Corinto in the north.
Taxis: Use taxis that have the driver’s identification number, name and photograph clearly visible on the dashboard. Where possible use radio-dispatched taxis. If you are getting a taxi on the street, be sure to choose an authorised taxi, which has red plates. You should take note of the colour and number of the vehicle. Always negotiate the fare with the driver before the journey. It is customary in Nicaragua to share taxis with strangers, but you are advised to try to arrange a private journey with the driver.
