General: Panama, officially the Republic of Panama (Republica de Panama), is the southernmost country of Central America. It is bordered by Costa Rica to the northwest and Colombia (in South America) to the southeast. Panama is in a strategic location on the eastern end of isthmus forming a land bridge connecting North and South America, and controls Panama Canal that links the North Atlantic Ocean via the Caribbean Sea with the North Pacific Ocean. Panama is divided into 11 provinces and one territory and became independent from Colombia on November 3, 1903. Taxis: Taxis throughout Panama can be recognized by their numbered markings. They come in various sizes, shapes and colours. The fares are based on zones or areas, and not determined by meters. Cab drivers are required to carry a copy of the zone chart with them at all times. Most fares within the metropolitan area average between 1.00 and 1.50 PAB, and for each additional person there is a 0.25 PAB surcharge. Trips from Panama City to Tocumen International Airport cost approx. 15 PAB per person, plus 5 PAB for each additional person. The standard hourly rate for taxi rental is 8 PAB, but it is advisable that you establish a price with the cab driver before departing.
Money: Bank transfers are difficult, expensive and can take several days (although Western Union offers a quicker service) so ensure you have enough money for your stay. Foreign cheques cannot be cashed in Panama. Travellers cheques are difficult to exchange and rates of commission are very high. ATM machines are widely available in banks and shopping malls but the daily withdrawal limit varies between banks as does the commission or fees charged for its use. Credit/debit cards are also widely used for payment in establishments, but when paying cash many will only accept US$20 notes or require identification for use of larger value notes because of problems with counterfeit $50 and $100 notes.
