Useful Information on Peru
General: Peru, officially the Republic of Peru (Spanish: República del Perú), is a country in western South America bordered on the north by Ecuador and Colombia, on the east by Brazil, on the southeast by Bolivia, on the south by Chile, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean. Peruvians have a generally informal, laid-back attitude to clothing and life itself. Shaking hands is the customary way to greet people. International telephone country code: +51, Internet country code: .pe, Electricity voltage: 220V frequency 60 Hz, Electrical outlet: North American/Japanese 2-blade type
Languages: Spanish and Quechua are the official languages in Peru. English is common in major holiday areas but not in most other places. Quechua and Aymara are native languages and in some areas these are the only languages spoken.
Major cities: Lima (capital city), Cusco, Arequipa, Puno, Callao, Iquitos
International airports:
- Lima, Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM)
- Cuzco, Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ)
- Arequipa, Alfredo Rodríguez Ballón International Airport(AQP)
- Iquitos, Francisco Secada Vignetta International Airport (IQT)
- Juliaca, Inca Manco Cápac International Airport (JUL)
- Puerto Maldonado, Puerto Maldonado International Airport (PEM)
- Tacna, Carlos Ciriani Santa Rosa International Airport (TCQ)
- Trujillo, Carlos Martínez de Pinillos International Airport (TRU)
- Pucallpa, David Abensur Rengifo International Airport (PCL)
- Piura, Guillermo Concha Iberico International Airport (PIU)
Ports and terminals: Callao, Iquitos, Matarani, Paita, Pucallpa, Yurimaguas
Taxis: You should be particularly careful when arriving at Lima’s Jorge Chavez International Airport. It is recommended that you use the services of one of three official companies located at desks directly outside the International and Domestic Arrival halls. Tourists have also been targeted by bogus taxi drivers when arriving at bus terminals and in the main tourist areas of Lima, Cusco and Arequipa. Use a taxi from a reputable company, if possible booked in advance from a hotel reception desk or by telephone. Do not leave your luggage in the cab with the driver behind the wheel. Wait for the driver to stop the engine and get out first. Most taxis don't have metres and you should negotiate a fare to your intended destination before getting into the cab. Yellow taxis are the safest and Peru taxi fares are relatively cheap. Tipping is not required for taxis but it is customary to give 10% at bars and restaurants.
Currency: The official currency in Peru is the Nuevo Sol (PEN), plural Nuevos Soles, which is divided into 100 centimos. The currency includes 1, 2 and 5 Sol in coins. The bills denominations are of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Nuevos Soles. It is recommended that you try to avoid the larger notes 100 and 200 as it can be difficult to obtain change. The US dollar is the only foreign currency that is widely accepted in Peru. Due to forgeries, it can be very difficult to exchange marked or torn notes, particularly in high denominations. Brand new bank notes can also be treated with suspicion. The value of the Nuevo Sol can vary from day to day. The approximate exchange rate on 7th August 2010 was: 1 Euro = 3.69 PEN, 1 US$ = 2.80 PEN, 1 GB£ = 4.44 PEN.
Casinos: Peru has legalized gambling that includes horse racing, pari-mutuel betting, and casinos. Peru is a popular destination in Central and South America for tourists as well as gamblers. Peru casinos include the popular table games of blackjack, roulette, punto banco and poker, as well as slot/video machines. While smoking is still permitted on the main gaming floor, non-smoking areas are being added.
