Useful information on Slovakia
General: Slovakia (long form: Slovak Republic) is a landlocked country in Central Europe with a population of over five million. The Slovak Republic borders the Czech Republic and Austria to the west, Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east and Hungary to the south. The largest city is its capital, Bratislava. Slovakia is a member state of the European Union and NATO. It joined the European Union in 2004 and joined the Eurozone on January 1, 2009. Slovakia is also well-known for its spa towns. The best-known of them is Piestany. Official language: Slovak (Slovensko), Timezone: GMT + 1 hour (Central European Time), Electricity: 220V/50Hz.
Visa: Not required for the citizens of most European countries and for: Brasil, Thailand, Singapore, USA, Canada, Republic of South Africa.
Major cities: Bratislava (capital and largest city), Kosice (second-largest city), Banska Bystrica, Nitra, Presov, Zilina, Trnava.
Major airports: There are six major airports of which 5 international ones in Slovakia. The largest are in Bratislava, in Košice and in Poprad:
BTS - Bratislava M. R. StefAnik International airport
KSC - Kosice International airport
TAT - Poprad-Tatry International airport
SLD - Sliac International airport
PZY - Piestany International airport
ILZ - Zilina airport
Bratislava Airport M. R. Stefanik (BTS), is located approximately 12 km from the city center. The distance between Bratislava and Vienna airport is around 60 km. There are direct buses to the Vienna International Airport in Austria which is the biggest airport in the Central European region. Košice Airport (KSC) is located approximately 10km from the city center of Kosice. There are daily flights to and from Bratislava and other domestic and European destinations.
Taxis: Bratislava has about 20 separate taxi firms. Taxi cabs with the name of a taxi service on them are generally better than those with only a yellow taxi light on the roof, and are usually cheaper than the taxi cabs found at large hotels. Independent taxi cabs often prey on unsuspecting tourists at major tourist spots. Either negotiate the fare with the driver in advance or ask someone to call you a registered taxi. Before taking a hotel taxi make sure it does not charge you inflated rates. It is customary but not required to tip the taxi driver.
Currency: On 1 January 2009 Slovakia joined the Eurozone. The Euro (€, EUR) has replaced the Slovak Crown (SKK) as Slovakia’s national currency. Commercial banks will exchange SKK bank notes from 1 January to 31 December 2009, and coins from 1 January to 30 June, for free.
