Useful information on Venezuela
General: Venezuela, officially called the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, is a tropical country on the northern coast of South America. It borders Colombia to the west, Guyana to the east, and Brazil to the south. Its northern coastline includes numerous islands in the Caribbean Sea, and in the northeast borders the northern Atlantic Ocean. Venezuela was one of three countries that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (the others being Ecuador and New Granada, which became Colombia). Venezuela is a federal presidential republic consisting of 23 states, the Capital District (covering Caracas), and Federal Dependencies (covering Venezuela's offshore islands). The vast majority of Venezuelans live in the cities of the north, especially in the capital, Caracas, which is also the largest city. International telephone country code: +58, Internet country code: .ve, Electricity voltage: 120V frequency 60 Hz, Electrical outlet: Type A North American/Japanese 2-blade, Time zone: -4.30 GMT (Venezuela does not use daylight saving time)
Languages: The predominant language in Venezuela is Venezuelan Spanish. Whilst Spanish is dominant, there are at least 40 languages spoken in Venezuela. Other languages used include English (valued particularly by professionals and academics), Italian (spoken by Italo-Venezuelans) and Portuguese.
Climate: Venezuela's climate varies in relation to the altitude, the country presents a variety of climates ranging from tropical wet to the alpine. The rainy season is during the months between May and November.
Major cities: Caracas, Barquisimeto, Ciudad Bolívar, Ciudad Guayana, Maracaibo, Maracay, Petare, Valencia
States/districts: Venezuela is divided into 23 states and a capital district corresponding to the city of Caracas (capital city in brackets): 1 Amazonas (Puerto Ayacucho), 2 Anzoátegui (Barcelona), 3 Apure (San Fernando de Apure), 4 Aragua (Maracay), 5 Barinas (Barinas), 6 Bolívar (Ciudad Bolívar), 7 Carabobo (Valencia), 8 Cojedes (San Carlos), 9 Delta Amacuro (Tucupita), 10 Falcón (Coro), 11 Guárico (San Juan de los Morros), 12 Lara (Barquisimeto), 13 Mérida (Mérida), 14 Miranda (Los Teques), 15 Monagas (Maturín), 16 Nueva Esparta (La Asunción), 17 Portuguesa (Guanare), 18 Sucre Cumaná), 19 Táchira (San Cristóbal), 20 Trujillo (Trujillo), 21 Vargas (La Guaira), 22 Yaracuy (San Felipe), 23 Zulia (Maracaibo)

Taxis: Taxis in Venezuela are one of the most reliable means of transportation in the country. Always use a legal taxi with yellow number plates. Cabs with white plates are not legal taxis. It is best to carry small change as many taxi drivers rarely have change to break a large bill, and always settle on a price before getting into the cab. Tipping a taxi driver is not customary and can appear strange. When taking a taxi from the airport use official taxis (black Ford Explorers) or arrange airport transfer with your hotel prior to arrival. When taking a taxi in Caracas, or other towns or cities, it is advisable to use only pre-booked taxis rather than hailing them in the street. Hotels will normally book a taxi from a reputable company or supply their own limousine service.
Currency: The Venezuelan Bolivar Fuerte (VEF) is the currency in Venezuela. The Venezuelan Bolivar Fuerte is also known as Bolivars, and Bolívar. The symbol for VEF can be written BsF. The Venezuelan Bolivar Fuerte is divided into 100 centimos. The approximate exchange rate on 8th February 2011 was: 1 Euro = 5.84 VEF, 1 US$ = 4.30 VEF, 1 GB£ = 6.93 VEF.
Money: Venezuela's currency is the Bolivar fuerte (BsF), which replaced the old bolivar on January 1, 2008 at the rate of 1 BsF to 1000 old Bs. Due to strict currency controls in place since 2003 bolivars are not easily convertible either in or outside the country. Because there is no facility for changing Bolivars to US dollars, or any other currency, when leaving Venezuela; travellers should consider only changing the required amount to avoid having leftover Bolivars. You are advised to exchange currency at official currency exchange booths only and not to use the black market. Bureaux de change (Italcambios), including at the airport, will exchange US dollars for Bolivars. US dollars and US dollar traveller's cheques (American Express) are accepted at most bureau de change offices throughout Venezuela. In most towns and all major cities, international credit cards (Visa and MasterCard) are accepted.
Casinos: In 1997, the Venezuelan Parliament passed "The Regulation of Casinos, Bingo and Slot Machine Law", which permitted casinos in five-star hotels with a minimum of 200 rooms. Bingo halls with slot machines would be permitted in three-, four- and five-star hotels as well as other facilities authorized by a newly established gaming control board. Casinos, along with other gaming establishments, would only be permitted in tourist zones. However, in the 10 years following the gaming act a large number of illegal stand-alone slot halls and casinos can be found everywhere. Following recent new legislation, severe restrictions on casinos are being imposed.
