One of Michigan’s most popular casino is actually in Canada. It is the Casino Windsor in Ontario, which is just across the river from downtown Detroit.
Casino Windsor first opened in May 1994 and a riverboat casino (Northern Belle Casino) was later added to accommodate the overflow crowds which the casino drew. The original casino and riverboat were closed in July 1998 when a new larger casino/hotel opened to replace them.
All winnings are paid in Canadian currency and the minimum gambling age is 19. The casino is open 24 hours and offers the following games: blackjack, craps, single-zero roulette, baccarat, mini baccarat, big six wheel, pai-gow poker, caribbean stud poker, and let it ride.
Detroit Casinos
In November 1996 Detroit voters approved, by a 51% to 49% majority, a referendum to allow three casinos in the downtown area. Each operator has opened a temporary casino which, by law, must be replaced by a permanent casino within four years.
All three casinos are open 24 hours and normally offer the following games: blackjack, craps, roulette, baccarat, mini baccarat, caribbean stud poker, pai gow poker, and let it ride. The minimum gambling age at all Detroit casinos is 21.
Indian Casinos
There are 16 Native Indian casinos in Michigan and since the majority of the casinos are small, most of the dining facilities are more like snack bars rather than restaurants. The largest casino is Soaring Eagle which has more than 50 blackjack tables and over 4,000 slot machines.
All Indian casinos in Michigan are normally open 24 hours and offer the following games: blackjack, slots, and video poker. Other games offered are: craps, roulette, baccarat, mini baccarat, poker, caribbean stud poker, let it ride, three-card poker, keno, and bingo. The minimum gambling age at most Michigan casinos is 21. The two exceptions are Soaring Eagle and Chip-In’s Island where the minimum age is 18.
